During 2009 I made a large artist's book,

"Into the Cacao Grove."

It won second prize in the Quilt Expressions section of the Festival of Quilts 2009, held at the NEC, Birmingham.

It is now available as a printed artist's book. I will also be taking copies to the Festival of Quilts.

It is 24.5 cm x 21 cm, 32 pages, and the images are in full colour.

This project enabled me to combine my interest in books, illustration and mixed media. The pages are appliqued and embroidered, with my own text shown opposite. I painted and printed most of the fabrics, and the book is based on the flora and fauna of the rain forest, including, of course, the cacao pod.

I believe that many years of walking to school past Cadbury's in Bournville, Birmingham, with the smell of chocolate in the air, have largely influenced my choice in subject matter for my first book...that and my deep concern with the necessity to guard and protect these amazing forests.

No peaceful dark, moves

The animal, his soul

The Moon

Along the verdant track.

Dawn moth leaving,

Jewel drops descend

the column of night.

Cool veins excited

Flicker, fly, glide

The sun makes whiter spaces.

The day moves into leaf light

The crescent fruit,

Falling.

Falling light

Magenta, green,

Fuchsia, emerald,

Bright.

Baroque islands float

Beneath frantic

wingbeat.

Gilded pods evade the monkey's grasp.

Gold and heat

Bone branch.

Into the cacao grove

Golden fruit,

Floating

In the red heat.

Heat, the sultry noon,

The chameleon knows

No rest, his cool

blood hotter.

A green and gaudy gem,

Precious, lost

Unseen humour.

Not to be alone

A gift, luck and luck.

Luscious beasts

of leaf and mould

Transformed, to

Gold and metal sheen.

Alchemy.

Stars and frogs and

Supernovas,

Night and sky explode,

Streamers from the universe.

14 B00KS

14 BOOKS is a mixed media wall piece dealing with autobiographical material. It incorporates stitched fabric and paper, printed images, painted illustrations, text and mixed media additions.

Each page is A 3 sized, 30 cm x 40 cm, and the works are mounted on Khadi paper.
